La organización sin fines de lucro The Center for Public Integrity fue premiada por segunda vez con un Pulitzer en la categoría Investigación Periodística por descubrir la conspiración de unos médicos y abogados para negar asistencia médica a mineros con enfermedades pulmonares. La presunta negligencia fue denunciada y llevada a los tribunales de justicia.
El periodista Chris Hamby fue premiado con 10 mil dólares. Entre los finalistas están los periodistas Megan Twohey de Reuters y Phillip Reese de The Sacramento Bee.
